This site provides information about the record company sleeves used for New Zealand pressed and distributed 7" vinyl 45s. There are some gaps and possible mistakes. If you can add a correct date or sleeve please add a comment or email us. The images of the centre labels are meant to be a guide. Some record companies produced multiple variations of their labels. Too many to show here. This site is dedicated to record sleeves.

MGM

MGM: 1955 to 1960

His Master's Voice had been releasing 78s on the MGM label in New Zealand since 1949. It started manufacturing and distributing MGM seven-inch 45 rpm EPs in 1955. They were issued in picture sleeves. Singles were introduced in 1957.  They were released in a unique MGM sleeve.

MGM Sleeve 1957 to 1960?

I am unsure exactly when the above red sleeve was retired and the below green sleeve was introduced. It seems to have been round 1960. If you can shed light on this please leave a comment or email me. Thanks.

In 1963 a unique sleeve was introduced.

In line with other His Master's Voice (NZ) Ltd. labels like Parlophone and Columbia, the MGM sleeve between 1962 to 1964 had a "Here are some outstanding LPs..." advertisement printed on its rear.

Between late 1964 (or early 1965) until 1966 MGM followed its His Master's Voice (NZ) Ltd cohorts in printing an advertisement on the rear of their sleeves featuring portable turntables.

Possibly between the same years, a similar MGM sleeve version was distributed with a quad-panel ad featuring portable radios. Whether this came before or after the tri-panel portable turntables ad, I am unsure.

Philips NZ took over distribution of MGM in late 1967. The effect wasn't felt until 1968 when the blue-green circle sleeve was introduced.

The distribution arm of Philips Electrical Industries of New Zealand Ltd was rebranded as Polygram Records (NZ) Ltd in 1970. In 1971 MGM singles started being  issued in the Polygram company sleeve.
